2011 Australian Kiteboarding Nationals, Alva Beach, Queensland

“We had 20knts SE winds and blue sky it was an awesome event.
Had hundreds of people come down to check out the action on the water in the first pond at Alva Beach Life Savers club.
I finished 3rd in the men’s open Freestyle, so stoked.”

A big thankx to Marvin Baumeister from in the loop kiteboarding for organizing the event.

2010

Simon took part in the PKRA world tour. He attending the last two tour stops in New Caledonia and the Gold Coast in November- December 2010.

New Caledonia:
I got some real good exposure in my first PKRA tour stop in New Caledonia I got 9th in the long distance race and I got 17th in the men’s freestyle.

Check these web page out they are some of the ones with my video link to their page.

I’m pretty stoked considering most the guys on the tour are fully sponsored and getting paid to fly around the world to do the PKRA.

Gold Coast:
Unfortunately while in the Gold coast, there wasn’t much wind and they could only run the single eliminations; so I didn’t get my final result for freestyle.
In the board across I made it to the final and got placed 5th.freestyle

PREVIOUS COMPETITIONS:
Kitestock- Dongera- 19-21 Feb 2010

Kitestock was totally a awesome event! The underground crew came down for it too! I ended up winning the 'Big Air' comp.

Australian Nationals- Melbourne, St Kilda- 8- 14 Feb 2010

The 2010 Australian Freestyle Kiteboarding Nationals was held at St Kilda on the 11th of Feb to the 13th of Feb.
We had a great judging panel Toby Bromwitch (PKRA judge and Core publisher), Australian rider Alexander James Lewis-Hughes, British PKRA riders Tom Court and Sam Light.

On the first day we had some crazy weather conditions and no wind. It was nice and sunny all morning. Then in the afternoon we had heavy down pours, lightning and thunder. You could feel the lightning hit the ground; it was crazy! Because of the weather conditions the St Kilda Street drainage was running across the beach into the harbor where we were kiting. This left a big pool of dirty infected water with rubbish and syringes on the beach- so we called it off for the day.

Day two we had light wind enough for 12 meter kites so they made a start. Because of my results from last year I was a seated rider so I got to walk though my first heat. The heats were 7 min long with a 3 min changeover just like most comps. The first heat is always the scariest for me because you're not in the groove. I did pretty well, got through, and did most of my tricks I’d planned for my heat. With a full day of competing they managed to get through the single elimination. I got to the semifinals. I was up against my mate Ewan Jasper. We had been training in Perth together so this was a great opportunity to test each other out, it was a fun heat! Ewan was unlucky and I ended up 3rd in the single elimination.

Day three we had slightly stronger winds; nice weather to do the double elimination and the finals. I was stoked about getting 3rd in the singles which meant I could just chill and watch the doubles. Ewan ended up holding his 4th place so I had to vers him again to defend my place in 3rd.I wasn’t as lucky as the first time. I just couldn't stick the trick I wanted to do in the heat and Ewan rode really well and ended up in third, leaving me in 4th place. So all in all it was a good day. We got the comp finished and got some good results which everyone was stoked about.

Big thanks to George Ierodiaconou from kite mag for making it all happen and all the sponsors and everyone who helped out with the event.

2. Keahi De Aboitz (Noosa)
3. Ewan Jaspan (St Kilda)

Core Slider Jam- Woodmans Point, WA - 25 Jan- 2 Feb 2010

This year the Slider Jam was even bigger than last, we had International riders such as Andre Phillip, Aaron Hadlow, Alex Pastor, Andy Yates, Bruna Kajiya, Greg Norman, Jessy Richman, Cam Prest and many more.

Simon entered into the comp, but because there was such strong wind that the obstackles started falling apart, there ended up being an 'Expression Session' instead. Only the top 3 were listed, which were Andre Phillip, Cam Prest and Aaron Hadlow.

On the second day of the comp, only three people went out kiting as the wind was so strong. Obstackles were falling apart, so we went out for a Kite instead. I did some awesome Kiteloops with Aaron Hadlow and Ali Barrot.

Australian Nationals- Tannum Sans Qld- April 2009

Kite Mag April 2009

The competition site really tested the rider’s ability as the conditions dramatically varied within short time periods from extremely gusty, to flat, choppy and unpredictable.

Simon got into the top ten, taking eighth place.

There was also a photo shoot after the competition and the pictures went into Kite mag and Kite Boarder. Simon was amongst the riders whose photos were taken and he got his first full page shot.

New Zealand Nationals- Feb 2009

Simon was invited to the New Zealand Nationals, but as there were some complications with different countries entering a National title, Simon was unable to compete. However, he still flew over and was a guest judge.

This was a great experience as he learnt a lot about competing and what is needed, behind the scenes, as well as in front of a crowd, and it will help in upcoming events. He also met many awesome riders and found it good to see what New Zealand had to offer.

It is always great hanging out with the Underground guys, and was also interesting to see their old factory, which is now where they make their prototype boards.

Core Slider Jam- Woodies Point- Jan 2009

It was the second year of the Core slider jam. This year a lot of preparation and time went into building and constructing the event and obstacles. We had sliders and kickers such as the 'roof top', 'up-across, down-across slider', 'sea rail', 'a frame' and a 'kicker'. This upgrade meant that many international riders showed up for the event. They included Alex, Cam, Kevin, Andy, Ben, and Sam, among others, who were experienced rail riders and were keen to bust out their moves.

There were two separate categories for the event; the pros, and the amateurs. Most of the WA guys entered into the amateurs as it was their first, or second time hitting the rails, and just wanted to have a bit of fun.

Simon ended up getting second place in the amateurs.

Kitejam- Safety Bay WA- Dec 2008

This was another great event, with good wind. There was three riders from the world tour who were placed in the top three, Simon Wichtermann coming in at fourth place.

Australian Nationals-Elliot Heads (Bundaberg) 7-11th of March 2008

Unfortunately Simon had to withdraw from the competition due to an injury.

Kitejam- Safety Bay WA- Dec 2007
The event was lots of fun and there was strong wind, nearly too much towards the end! There were also great riders from all over the world.
